Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
- Thinly slice the potatoes using a mandoline or sharp knife for even cooking.
Assembly and Baking
- In a large bowl, combine heavy cream, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
- Arrange a layer of sliced potatoes in the prepared baking dish, slightly overlapping.
- Sprinkle a portion of shredded Gruyère cheese over the potatoes.
- Pour some of the cream mixture over the potatoes and cheese.
- Repeat the layers until all ingredients are used, ending with a layer of potatoes.
- Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes.
- Remove the foil, sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese, and bake for another 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown and bubbly.
Serving
- Let the au gratin potatoes rest for 5-10 minutes before serving to allow the layers to set.
Notes
For extra flavor, infuse the cream with a bay leaf and a few sprigs of thyme before pouring over the potatoes. To ensure even cooking, slice your potatoes as uniformly as possible. If you don't have Gruyère, cheddar or a blend of melting cheeses works well too.
