Ingredients

Funnel Cake Batter
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1.5 cups milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Frying and Topping
  • 4 cups vegetable oil for frying
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar for dusting

Equipment

  • large bowl
  • whisk
  • deep skillet or Dutch oven
  • funnel
  • wire rack
  • paper towels

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Then, create a well in the center of the dry ingredients.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, egg, and vanilla extract; then pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and whisk until just combined, being careful not to overmix the batter.
Frying
  1. Heat the vegetable oil in a large, deep skillet or Dutch oven to 375°F (190°C), ensuring you have at least 2 inches of oil for proper frying.
  2. Carefully pour 1/2 cup of the batter into a funnel, then drizzle the batter into the hot oil in a circular motion, starting from the center and swirling outwards to create a lacy design. Fry for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy.
Serving
  1. Remove the funnel cake from the oil and place it on a wire rack lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. Immediately dust generously with powdered sugar before serving warm.

Notes

Ensure oil temperature is maintained to achieve a crispy funnel cake. For an extra treat, serve with fruit, whipped cream, or chocolate sauce.
