Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 cup Organic whole oat groats (not instant or rolled oats)
  • 4 cups Filtered water (for soaking and rinsing)

Equipment

  • Large glass jar (1-quart or larger)
  • Breathable lid (cheesecloth or sprouting lid)
  • Colander or fine-mesh sieve

Method

Step-by-step Instructions
  1. Rinse the oat groats thoroughly under cool running water using a colander to remove any dirt or debris.
  2. Place the rinsed oat groats in a large glass jar and add filtered water, ensuring the groats are fully submerged with at least two inches of water above them.
  3. Cover the jar with a breathable lid, such as a cheesecloth secured with a rubber band, and let the groats soak at room temperature for 8-12 hours or overnight.
  4. After soaking, drain the water completely from the jar using the breathable lid or a fine-mesh sieve, then rinse the groats thoroughly with fresh filtered water and drain again.
  5. Invert the jar at an angle in a bowl or draining rack to allow excess water to drip out and ensure good air circulation, preventing mold growth.
  6. Rinse and drain the sprouts twice daily (morning and evening) for the next 5-6 days, ensuring they remain moist but not waterlogged.
  7. By day 7, your oatmeal sprouts should have small white tails (sprouts) of about 1/4 to 1/2 inch long, indicating they are ready for harvest.
  8. Once sprouted, give them a final rinse, then gently pat them dry with a clean cloth or paper towel before storing them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

Notes

Ensure you use whole oat groats, not rolled oats, as only whole grains will sprout. Always use filtered water to avoid introducing chemicals that could hinder sprouting or contaminate your sprouts. Maintain good air circulation and thorough drainage to prevent mold, which is crucial for successful sprouting. Enjoy your freshly grown, nutritious oatmeal sprouts in salads, sandwiches, or smoothies!
