Chili Growing Steps
  1. Start by planting your chili seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the last frost date in your area; sow them about 1/4 inch deep in seed starting trays filled with a good quality potting mix.
  2. Provide warmth for germination, ideally 75-85°F (24-29°C), using a heat mat if necessary, and ensure consistent moisture in the soil without overwatering.
  3. Once seedlings emerge, place them under grow lights for 14-16 hours a day to prevent legginess, keeping the lights a few inches above the plants.
  4. When the seedlings have developed 2-3 sets of true leaves, carefully transplant them into larger pots, ensuring the root ball remains intact.
  5. Gradually acclimate your chili plants to outdoor conditions over 7-10 days before transplanting them into your garden or final outdoor containers, protecting them from strong winds and direct sun initially.
  6. Plant chilies in a sunny spot with well-draining soil, spaced about 18-24 inches apart, and water regularly, especially during dry spells; fertilize every 2-4 weeks with a balanced fertilizer.
  7. Harvest your chili peppers when they reach their full color and desired size, typically 60-90 days after transplanting, by snipping them off the plant with pruning shears.

Notes

Chili plants thrive in warm conditions, so protect them from cold snaps. Pinch back the growing tips of young plants to encourage bushier growth and a higher yield. Remember to wear gloves when handling hot chilies to avoid skin irritation.
