Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and ensure the turkey is completely thawed.
- In a small bowl, combine softened butter with minced garlic, chopped rosemary, and thyme.
- Gently separate the turkey skin from the breast and spread half of the butter mixture underneath, then rub the remaining butter over the outside of the turkey.
Roasting
- Place the quartered onion, chopped carrots, and celery in the cavity of the turkey.
- Season the turkey generously with salt and black pepper.
- Place the turkey on a roasting rack in a large roasting pan, then pour chicken broth into the bottom of the pan.
- Roast for 30 minutes at 425°F (220°C), then reduce the oven temperature to 350°F (175°C).
- Continue roasting for another 2-2.5 hours, basting every 30-45 minutes, until a meat thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the thigh reads 165°F (74°C).
Resting
- Once cooked, remove the turkey from the oven, tent it loosely with foil, and let it rest for at least 30 minutes before carving.
- This resting period allows the juices to redistribute, ensuring a tender and moist turkey.
Notes
For extra flavor, consider brining the turkey overnight before roasting. You can also add other aromatics like lemon halves or apple wedges to the cavity for a more complex taste.
